Tonight, we will be honouring a very long tradition of getting together with our good friends Hilary and Rob for New Year’s Eve. We go to their house for Chinese food and then we make our way here for games, more food and to watch the ball drop. It is a struggle every year for me to want to stay up until midnight. I would be happy to wrap it all up by 10pm; the time I generally lose my ‘fun’ personality.

This year is a little different as we are down to only having the baby (the almost 10 year old baby) with us. The older two are off with friends. Sigh.

Here are the ways I envision some people spending the big night…

Dinner Out at a Nice Restaurant  (Or, if you’re my mom, at Crabby Joes, also a fine option)

Going out for New Year’s dinner is a really nice idea. It’s festive and social and all you have to do is get ready. We used to do this before kids – and we actually kept doing it when they were really young and didn’t know the difference.

A New Year’s Party!

I think New Year’s parties are also a great idea. New Year’s is a great excuse to get dressed up, dance and have fun. I have always wanted to be invited to a New Year’s Eve wedding.

A Quiet Night at Home

Another very appealing option. After the hustle and bustle of Christmas, staying home in your pajamas with some food and a movie sounds perfect.

A Quiet Night at Home Alone and Feeling Lonely

Big nights like New Year’s Eve can be tough on people, especially if we are feeling down about ourselves or lonely.  I picture Bridget Jones drinking and singing Celine Dion’s All By Myself but there is really nothing funny about it.

However you spend tonight, I hope it’s perfect for you. Happy New Year!
