It is a point of pride for me that I only wash my hair twice a week. I tell everyone I can. And people are generally curious. Some are grossed out. But what about when you exercise? Doesn’t it get greasy? Do you wear a shower cap?
I love my routine and I could never go back to the grind of washing and drying my hair EVERYDAY! There was a period of training I had to put my hair through (and by training I just mean washing it less and not going out in public) so it would respond to the new program, but it cooperated fairly quickly.
Washing my hair twice a week is one of the greatest gifts I have ever given myself. I try to convince everyone I can to do the same. Most are reluctant; curious but not ready to commit.
In the spirit of transparency I will share with you the process I go through every time I do wash my hair:
- Wash with shampoo. Rinse.
- Wash again with same shampoo. Rinse.
- Wash with blue shampoo and leave on while washing other bits. Rinse.
- Apply conditioner and leave on while washing more bits. Rinse.
- Apply leave in conditioner once out of the shower.
- Apply heat protectant to ends.
- Blow dry with round brush. Usually. Sometimes I just leave my curls.
Now you know why I only do this twice a week!!! Maybe I should aim for once!
How often do you wash your bedsheets is always my next question!
How often do you wash your hair? Please share!
What about the other items from the Buzzfeed article?
A bit more…
Buzzfeed’s advice on how often to wash everything!…Tip #14, really?
This of course totally caught my eye!! I’m once a week.. sometimes it’s 10days and I’m like.. crap… I REALLY have to wash my hair!!!
Same routine, but the difference to get more time is that your second shampoo use either L’Oreal Professionnel Pure resource or Kerastase Bain Divalant. They are Shampoos meant for oily scalp and dry ends. It removes excess oil from your scalp yet hydrates your ends. Second thing… use a dry cleaner on day one. By putting it there before your hair is already greasy, it absorbs the oils as they start to come out. Hope this gives you a week.
Thank you for these tips! I might have to come in and have you walk me through it.
Hey lori!! So this is all news to me. I don’t go more than 2 days without washing my hair. Mostly because It gets pretty unruly after that since I just scrunch and air dry my curls. Now my daughter Jay has super thick hair. So straightening is a chore for her! She likes to stretch it out as far as washing, but her hair/scalp starts to smell bad after 2-3 days max because she works out or has volleyball practice every day. Any suggestions for her sweaty head? Love reading your blog btw😊
Haha, I love that this new thinking for you! And thanks for reading! I don’t know about the sweaty head. I get one too. I guess that’s why day 4 is a must wash day for me still. Maybe dry shampoo? I’m no expert!
Do you use a shower cap on the days you don’t wash?
You bet!
I’m curious to know what you do in the non-washing days. How do you deal with the product from the previous days or do you not use much product? Do you wet it? I would like to try not washing it but it’s the styling it on those off days that I can’t figure out.
So, I do use hair spray and on subsequent days I guess I just brush it out. There is certainly residue left but I don’t use that much. When I leave my hair curly out of the shower I definitely have to wet it in the mornings or it’s a mess. Give it a try when you don’t have too many plans out – safer that way!
Every 3rd day, on a typical week for washing my hair. My day one look is down, day two is half up, and day three is either an all up, or a wash day depending on what my schedule looks like for the day!
Sheets are every Wednesday and Saturday. It’s what I grew up doing, so I blame my mom! 🤪
Pillow cases… Every day! But just for me, because of my allergies! Otherwise they follow the sheet schedule!
I worked with a girl who was on a 10 day wash routine… But her hair smelled oily and gross! She also lived with a smoker, (🤮) so I’m sure that didn’t help!
I love the down, half up, then up schedule. Twice a week with your sheets is admirable. I think I would like to bump up to that.
Smelling badly is not good…I don’t ever want to be called gross!
It is refreshing to know that I am not the only one who tries to decrease hair washing days. I use to faithfully wash my hair every 2nd day (actually not during my university exam days. I recall putting baby powder in my hair to absorb the grease.!!! Well I suppose it’s not that different from dry shampoo!!) Now I aim for twice a week. My hairdresser told me that it’s better for our hair and that we just need to “train” it. Honestly my hair works better day 3…or so I convince myself just to have that extra sleep. 💤
I love that you used baby powder! Ahead of your time!!! And I LOVE the extra sleep!
I love your hair! This will be one of my summer priorities. Perhaps I can camp longer than two nights if I’m “training my hair”. Looking forward to more valuable time…without the hair dryer every.single.day. Enjoying your posts:)
You inspired this post! And thank you…for liking my hair and reading my posts 🙂
I literally was in a couple mtgs today and people complimented my hair, the secret…I haven’t washed it for 12 days. Lol. It actually looks a bit ‘homeless’ maybe that’s in now…
12 days?! I bow down. Wow. Amazing.
I wash my hair with shampoo once a week, I do wet it in the shower everyday because I don’t wear a shower cap.
That’s my story Lori 🙂
I loved that you shared it, Gayle!
dry shampoo works well Lori give it a try
I switched to washing my hair every couple of days several years ago and it was one of the best things! I also started using much better quality hair products at the same time. Game changer!
Right?! The best bathroom tip ever! And good shampoo goes a long way.
We are separated at birth!lol. Ive been doing this for years, it used to be embarrassing but I now proudly brag that I only wash my hair every 4-5days. I have fine hair so I love it best a few days in with lots of pollutants, hairspray and gunk in it. It goes up easier and my scalp is healthier. My latest fave thing is dry shampoo – a life changer – it helps with texture for styling and adding some needed umpf around day 4.lol I’ve curiously read about some who swear by never washing their hair. I’m not that hard core.
I haven’t tried dry shampoo yet. Maybe it could get me to once a week? I have heard about this non hair washing. I think about pets – and they don’t get their hair washed often. But I’m not that hard core either.
