I don’t know of any physical item that represents my teenage years more than my mixed tapes. (Mixed tapes keeps coming up as a spelling error but I don’t care. That’s what I call them!)  I loved making them. I loved writing out the song names by hand. I loved giving them to people (boyfriends, really). And I loved listening to them…over and over again.

Sadly, we don’t make mixed tapes any more. We don’t even make CDs. What record will our kids have of their teenage misery?

What was special about a mixed tape was that you really had to put thought into what songs made the cut. Remember trying to press record as soon as the DJ stopped talking? Classic.  Not so with playlists. My favourite playlist – which I creatively titled My Music – is three hours and 16 minutes long. It has 44 songs on it!

I want to continue creating playlists to capture the chapters of my life just like I did when I was a kid. I want to be able to put on a mix and be taken back in time for a little while – even when the chapters might not always be the happiest.
